Add a Custom Description to the "Other" Case Type

How to describe a case type that isn't in the list by adding free text when you select "Other."

How to add your own description when a case doesn't fit an available case type.

If the case type you need isn't listed, select Other and use the text field that appears to describe it. For example, a case can display as Other - Hospital Billing Dispute. The description you enter shows in the case index and in the Case Type column on reports.

NOTE: The text field is optional. The case type is saved as Other if you leave it blank.

Add a description when creating a new case

  • Add a new case.

  • Select Other from the Case Type drop-down menu.

  • A new text field will appear. Enter a short description of the case type (up to 100 characters).

  • Complete the remaining case details and click Save.

  • The case type will display as Other - [your description].

Add or update a description on an existing case

  • Navigate to the case.

  • Click 'i' on the keyboard or the green arrow at the top right of the case status and select Edit Case Index.

  • A pop-up window will appear.

  • Select Other from the case type drop-down menu, or keep it selected if the case is already an Other case.

  • Enter or edit the description in the text field that appears.

  • Click Save.

NOTE: The Case Index can also be edited from the Report and Management screens.

Where the description appears

  • In the case index at the top of the case, such as Other - Hospital Billing Dispute.

  • In the Case Type column on each report that tracks case type.

  • In the automatic note on the Notes Tab when the case type is changed, such as "Updated case type from Auto Accident to Other - Hospital Billing Dispute."

Things to know

  • The description is limited to 100 characters.

  • The description is for labeling and reporting only. It does not create a new case type.

  • The statute of limitations does not change. Cases use the default statute for the Other case type in the case's state. If a different statute applies, enter a custom statute on the case.

  • Features that depend on case type, such as custom intake forms and default document folder structures, continue to work for Other cases.
